Carolyn Sandy BakerApril 7, 1936 ~ April 29, 2018 (age 82)
Carolyn Sandy Baker, 82, with her boys and family by her bedside singing her favorite hymns, “Victory in Jesus,” “I Come to the Garden Alone,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “What a Day that Will Be” went home to heaven to be with her Savior, Jesus, as her sister, Katie Kittrell, lovingly prayed and said “Amen” on Sunday, April 29, 2018. Carolyn was born April 7, 1936 in Holly Springs, NC and graduated from Apex High School.
Growing up, she dearly loved her Godly single mother, Maggie Lee Sandy, who lavished her five sisters and two brothers with the abounding love of Jesus.
She enjoyed spending time with her siblings and friends, going to church, playing basketball, working in the tobacco fields to help the family, hanging out around Mineral Springs, as she visited her grandmother in downtown Fuquay-Varina, and dating OL Baker.
Carolyn dated OL Baker for eight years before they were married at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina, NC on March 17, 1962. They left a wonderful lineage of 54 years of marriage until OL went home to heaven on August 13, 2016.
Her sons, Rodney, Sterling, and Kenneth are eternally grateful for their Christian upbringing and the way their mom and dad loved one another and their boys as she cared for them, and taught them about Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. Carolyn and OL were ever present at their son’s school/sporting events at Cary Elementary, West Cary, Cary High and every major rite of passage their sons can remember.
Carolyn, in her boys’ eyes, is the “World’s Greatest Mom,” Nannie, cheerleader, encourager, counselor, friend, intercessor, and Jesus lover. She enjoyed being a homemaker, Children’s Sunday School Teacher and babysitter for over 25 years affectionately called “Mama Baker” by those she kept. Our home was a gathering place for friends.
Her Spirit filled life graciously extended kindness, peace, compassion, empathy, and sweetness in words and actions toward everyone. As a Proverbs 31 woman, her children rise-up and call her blessed (Proverbs 31:28). Thank you for loving us unconditionally every day of our lives.
She was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship, pastored by her son, Rodney, and loved reading her Bible, going to Sunday School, playing UNO, attending her grandchildren’s activities, shopping at GCF and listening to Jimmy Swaggart. She took seriously the scripture “Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).” Carolyn and OL prayed for their family by name each day. The sound of their spirit-filled prayers will always echo in the ears of their family.
During this time of grieving her family has hope in their relationship with Jesus, knowing we will join Jesus, mom and dad in heaven. The boys of Carolyn and OL Baker are forever thankful for their earthly parents’ love which has enabled them to better understand their Heavenly Father’s love at a deeper more intimate level. Carolyn has also been an incredibly loving and attentive “Nannie” to sixteen grandchildren and “GiGi” to two great grandchildren. Nannie’s house was filled with a sweet spirit of kindness, compassion, empathy, encouragement, and peace. She unashamedly talked about the Lord and led people to a relationship with Christ. Carolyn and OL had “no greater joy than to hear of their children walking in the truth” (3 John 1:4). She treasured knowing that all her family of the accountable age have trusted in Jesus and will be together forever in Heaven (1 John 5:11-13). She joined OL in heaven on Sunday (2 Corinthians 5:8) and is survived by her sons: Rodney (Debbie), Sterling (Kim) and Kenneth (Phyllis); grandchildren: Rachel Anne, Rebekah LeeAnne, Nathan OL, Sarah MaeLeonor, Elizabeth Carolyn, Joshua OL, Abigail Grace, Caleb OL, Hannah Marie, Esther ClaraLee, Kristen Alana (Paul), Sterling Christian, Hunter Lane, Kenneth, Andrew and Samuel; great grandchildren: Braxton Paul and Colton Baker; sister: Katie Kittrell and brother: Buck (Carol) Sandy.
A celebration of Carolyn’s eternal life with Jesus will be held with a visitation from 3:00pm-5:00pm and a funeral service at 5:00pm on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Williford Funeral Home at 201 East Academy St., Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526. Interment will be at the Baker family cemetery across from the Duncan Church of God in Fuquay-Varina at 1066 Oakridge Duncan Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
